The first real winter in Holland
This winter has been the harshest so far in the Netherlands and the bikers were the ones hit the hardest.
They were caught off guard by the unexpected early snowfall in December (snow in Holland usually comes in late January or February). Some bikes left on the streets for an overnight stay were left for longer periods.
Not that the owners don’t care. They just weren’t prepared for the sudden snowfall. Instead of retrieving their bikes in the morning to be used for the day ahead…. most took the buses, the metro or the tram… Better the bikes than the limbs.
So most of the bikes that were left outside were…..left out in the cold….. poor bikes.
But it took only a few days of abandonment of the bikes. After the realization that the snow would be here longer than the usual, the bikers after preparing their gears and armours were once again on the streets.
Well….once a biker… always a biker.

I keep scrolling through these photos. We currently have Bradford pear and purple-leaf plums in bloom: snow is an odd counterpoint.
Nice shots!!!!
although I don’t miss the snow & the cold at all…
Hi Kathy,
I remember that March of 2005, that was d first big snowfall in d Netherlands after three decades but it only lasted a week.
This time is entirely different. First snowfall was December 17, 2009 and continued till the 2nd week of February of 2010… the snow stayed for weeks, melted …then just when you think the weather is getting better and no more snowing….here it falls again. A full 2 months.. that’s a record for NL.
I myself loved the snow, but only for two weeks. After that I’ve been praying for it to stop. Gosh how I missed the rain…though i used to hate it too….
Thanks for stopping by,
mizdi
I only saw snow like that a few times while living in NL; usually it was gone in a couple of days, but one March snowfall hung around for a week or so. It made commuting from Langedijk to Amsterdam a real adventure.
Thanks for sharing the photos.
